about

The primary ingredient in this slice of madness is passion. We were wired that way. From my first encounters with these guys, that was a given.

John Barge and his mile a minute fervor, tempered by his sometimes more considered musings. Ian's ardent politics, unruly creativity and quiet integrity. Also his beret. John Terill frankly terrified me, imbued with his black trenchcoat, razored beard and diabolic scowl. First impressions. Three guys I happened onto that ended up the lens through which my everything passed. They were as astute, clever, talented and as funny as I thought I was. They knew their onions too. We were a ferocious alchemical stew of a band.

Recorded in a collision of desire, willfulness and whim, this album highlights what we were all about.

Dan Willems was a fan, a passionate musician, and a proud owner of a brand new Tascam Portastudio 4 track cassette machine. He was excited to record anything and everything. We had an urgency to get these songs down. Seat of the pants audio-verite ensued. Basements, bedrooms and borrowed spaces became our fractured studios. At the time we thought of these tracks as demos for future recordings. Now, viewed from the wrong end of the kaleidoscope, we were making an album.

We excavated the mixes and it passed to me to do something with them. Somewhere in there prowled an expression of who The Walking Ruins were. Behind the aging cassettes. Behind the here and now recording and mixing choices. The rediscovery of the energy, friendship, politics, individual idiosyncrasies, and mad absurdity that went into this band and these recordings was an esoteric personal and audio journey. Forensic cleanup turned out to be the completely wrong approach, so I leapt headlong into the adventure of uncovering the album that danced through these tapes. Thanks Mr. Willems, you are and have always been a truly magnanimous soul.

Here it is. Punk rock. We're pretty proud of it.

Walking Ruins Bloomington, Indiana

Rising up from the fetid swamps of southern Indiana, the Walking Ruins are a quartet playing punk'n'roll with abandonment. They always like a good time, especially on someone else's dime, and have released multiple studio recordings along with their frenetic live performances. ... more
